BOOX Screen or Touch Not Responding: Working Out What Failed
A screen that shows an image but ignores your finger, a display stuck mid-refresh, or damage no restart will fix. How to isolate touch faults from display faults, and what each one means.
An unresponsive screen has several very different causes that need very different responses. The point of this guide is to work out which one you have before doing anything drastic.
Start here: the image on screen means nothing
E Ink holds its last image with no power whatsoever. A device that crashed, switched off or ran flat still shows the page it was on.
Nearly everyone reads a visible page as evidence the device is running, then concludes touch has failed. It is the most common misdiagnosis there is. Judge from whether anything responds, never from what is displayed. Our guide to a frozen or dead BOOX covers this in more detail.
Step 1: Force restart before anything else
Hold the power button for 20 to 30 seconds without letting go. Nothing is erased.
A hung system looks exactly like a dead touchscreen, and this resolves most of them. Do it before you start diagnosing hardware.
Step 2: Isolate touch from display
If it still will not respond, this is the test that tells you what you are actually dealing with.
If your device has a pen, try it.
- Pen works, finger does not: the touch digitiser has failed while the display is fine. These are separate layers and they fail separately.
- Neither works, but the screen still updates when you press power to sleep and wake it: the display is fine, input has failed.
- The image itself is frozen or broken and does not change even on sleep and wake: a display or system fault, not a touch fault.
That single test narrows the problem more than anything else you can do.

Step 3: The environmental causes
Cold. E Ink particles move through a fluid that thickens as it cools, and touch layers and batteries suffer too. A device carried in from a Canadian winter can be sluggish or apparently unresponsive until it reaches room temperature.
Moisture or hand cream. Capacitive touch reads the electrical properties of your skin. Damp fingers, lotion residue or a film on the screen all interfere. Wipe the screen with a dry cloth and dry your hands.
Gloves. Ordinary gloves do not work on a capacitive touchscreen.
The case. A magnetic case flap folded behind the device can interfere, especially with the pen, which works magnetically. Take the case off entirely and retest before assuming a fault.
A screen protector. Thick or poorly applied protectors reduce touch sensitivity, and a lifting edge causes dead zones exactly where the air gap is. This is one reason we generally suggest going without one on E Ink, as our setup guide explains.
Step 4: One app, or everywhere?
If touch works in the Library but not in one app, it is that app rather than the device. Force stop it and reopen it. An app that hangs while still drawing to the screen looks precisely like a hardware failure.
If touch works everywhere except one region, and that region stays the same regardless of what is displayed, that points at the digitiser rather than software.
What a restart will never fix
Some things are physical, and no amount of restarting, resetting or reflashing changes them:
- A hard straight line across the display.
- A spidered or shattered pattern, usually from impact or pressure.
- A permanently black or white band that survives full refreshes.
- An area that is visibly indented, or where the glass moves.
These are panel damage. A factory reset will not help and only costs you your data.
Distinguish this from ordinary ghosting, which is faint, changes with content and clears on a full refresh. Our article on spots and ghosting shows how to tell them apart, and the distinction matters because one is normal and one is not.
Before you factory reset
A factory reset erases everything on the device. It is worth doing only when you have evidence of a software problem: touch that works intermittently, or fails only after certain apps run.
It is worth nothing at all when the panel is physically damaged, and it will destroy any notes you have not exported. If you are considering it, get your notes off first, as our stylus and notes guide describes, and ask us before you pull the trigger.

When it is a fault
Genuine panel and digitiser failures happen, and they are covered by the full manufacturer warranty on every new device we sell.
What helps us help you: a photo of the screen showing the problem, the result of the pen test above, whether it fails everywhere or in one region, and whether it survived a force restart. With that we can usually tell you quickly whether you are looking at a setting, an app or a hardware claim. Get in touch, or see the FAQ for how warranty support works.
Common questions
- My BOOX screen shows a page but does not respond to touch. What does that mean?
- Very little on its own. E Ink holds its last image with no power at all, so a device that has crashed, switched off or run flat still displays a page. A visible image is not evidence the device is running. Force restart it before assuming a touch fault.
- How do I tell a touch problem from a display problem?
- Use the pen if your device has one. If the pen works where your finger does not, the touch digitiser is at fault while the display is fine. If neither works but the image still changes, it is input. If the image itself is frozen or broken, it is the display.
- Part of my screen has a line or a shattered pattern. Can resetting fix that?
- No. A hard line, a spidered pattern or a permanently black band is physical damage to the panel and survives every restart and factory reset. That is a hardware repair, not a settings problem.
- Why did my screen stop responding in the cold?
- E Ink particles move through a fluid that thickens as it cools, and touch layers and batteries are affected too. In a Canadian winter a device brought in from outside can refresh sluggishly or seem unresponsive until it warms to room temperature. This is temporary.
