E Ink Computer Monitors: How They Work and Who Needs One

Under the glass is the same technology as a premium e-reader, scaled up to desk size: millions of pigment capsules that physically rearrange to form the image, and hold it without power. The trade is refresh behaviour. E-paper redraws slower than an LCD, and fast-changing regions can leave faint ghosting until the screen refreshes. Modern monitors manage this with selectable speed modes: a crisp mode for reading and writing, and faster modes that trade a little sharpness for smoother scrolling and video calls. You learn to flip modes the way you adjust volume, and for text work the crisp mode is simply beautiful.

A few practical settings make the experience dramatically better: use a light theme, bump font sizes a notch, prefer high-contrast editor themes, and map the refresh-mode toggle somewhere handy. Give it two days of adjustment and the regular monitor starts to look like a searchlight.
